The Acceptance Cycle of Innovation

I've been thinking a lot lately about how legacy institutions always seem to be dramatically effected by innovation that comes out of nowhere. The cycle seems pretty typical if it's the fall of an Empire like Rome, or the fall of an industry like Music. It seems to apply to companies, as well.

1. Ignore

2. Discount

3. Fear

4. Sue

5. Accept

Why do legacy companies, industries and cultures all seem to follow the same pattern? What can they do to escape it?

 

The Joy of Being Silly

As you might have noticed I’ve been on a bit of a writing hiatus this summer. I decided to take a couple of months away from the writing and spend more time with Bridget, Charlie and Harry and discover my inner 9 year old. Both Charlie and Harry are 9 so it seemed like an appropriate age for me to shoot for.

At 50, I often wonder why we, as adults, take life so seriously. Relationships. Politics. Business. And don’t forget the economy. Maybe it’s time to be silly a bit more often.
